Get Messy, Explore, Learn and Grow!

Messy play is all about exploring, experimenting and having fun without worrying about getting a little bit messy!

Our messy play sessions are designed for little ones aged 6 months – 5 years, with a variety of sensory experiences and activities for children to explore at their own pace. From squishing and scooping to pouring, painting, splashing and creating, every session offers something new to discover.

Messy play isn’t just fun – it’s a fantastic way for children to learn through hands-on experiences and develop important skills as they play.

What does messy play involve?

Our sessions can include a mixture of:

  • Messy sensory trays
  • Tactile materials to touch, feel and explore
  • Scooping, pouring, mixing and transferring
  • Colour and texture exploration
  • Arts and crafts
  • Imaginative/themed play
  • Sensory experiences designed to encourage curiosity and discovery

Why is messy play good for development?

Messy play provides children with opportunities to learn using their whole bodies and all their senses.

  • Fine Motor Skills – Grasping, squeezing, scooping, pouring and manipulating different materials help strengthen little hands and fingers, supporting the development of skills needed for future activities such as writing, drawing and using scissors.
  • Cognitive Development – Messy play encourages children to experiment, problem-solve and discover cause and effect. What happens when we mix two colours? What does the material feel like? How much can we pour into the container?
  • Sensory Development – Children experience different textures, colours, smells and sensations, helping them explore the world around them and build sensory awareness.
  • Creativity and Imagination – There are no right or wrong ways to play. Children can experiment, make choices and express themselves creatively without worrying about creating a ‘perfect’ result.
  • Communication and Social Skills – Messy play creates lots of opportunities for children to interact, share, explore alongside others and develop their language as they describe what they can see, feel and do.
  • Confidence and Independence – Being able to explore freely and make their own choices helps children develop confidence and independence. Sometimes the best learning happens when children are given the freedom to get stuck in!

Suitable for ages 6 months – 5 years

Messy play is suitable for a wide range of ages and children can participate at their own level.

For babies, this might mean reaching, grasping and experiencing new textures. Toddlers can explore cause and effect through scooping, pouring and mixing while school starters can enjoy more imaginative, creative and process-based activities.

Adult supervision is required throughout the session and activities are planned with little explorers in mind.

Come prepared to get messy!

As the name suggests, messy play can get VERY messy! We encourage little ones to fully embrace the experience so please don’t dress them in their best clothes.

Please bring:

  • A towel
  • A full change of clothes
  • Clothes and shoes suitable for getting messy
